In this enlightening show, author Dan Buettner embarks on a global journey to explore the lifestyles and habits of people living in unique communities known as the Blue Zones. LESSONS FROM THE SERIES
So, here are the top lessons that I learned from this series. Read them slowly and try to see if you wish to imbibe one or more of them in your lives.

Okinawa, Japan

  • You live longer not by trying to prevent death but by learning how to live.
  • Eat only 80% stomach full.
  • Don't get angry. Stay calm. Stay happy. Everything is just ok.
  • Avoid too much furniture. Sitting down on the floor and getting up 30 times a day is like doing 30 squats. Strengthens your core muscles, lower body, improves your balance. With all this, you avoid falling down often in old age - one of the primary reasons of poor health in that age.
  • Have a committed social group and meet often. Sing, dance, chat, share your hobbies in that circle. Loneliness in old age can cost 15 years of life expectancy.
  • Have a sense of purpose until the last day of your life. - Ikigai. Keep your minds engaged, bodies moving for that purpose - as much as you can.

Sardinia, Italy

  • Steepness of their house is an important factor. There are no lifts. So, a lot of walking climbing up and down every day is leading to longevity.
  • Long term stress kills, though short term stress is actually beneficial for us.

Loma Linda, USA

  • Longevity is basically exercise and communities. If you are depressed, you are not going to live very long.
  • Volunteering, not charity, adds physical activity and energizes your brain because you are focused on betterment of someone or something else other than you.
  • Vegetarian whole food, plant-based diet, a balanced one, that includes fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts, is vital for longevity.
  • Being a part of a faith-based community where you show up more than once a week increases your longevity by more than 7 years.
  • Your habits are influenced by your company. Get yourself in the right tribe of friends, who care about vegan food, are socially active, have inclination for spirituality and so on.

Ikaria, Greece

  • Drinking herbal teas, especially if you are doing it for decades has a litany of health benefits, especially it helps in reduced cases of dementia. They are anti-inflammatory, have antioxidants and lower blood pressure.
  • Raw honey is a better substitute for sugar.
  • Life partner relationship should be nurtured and invested into. Otherwise, all alone, the chances of a partner dying after one partner is dead, goes up by 2/3rd.
  • Organically grown and harvested wine is a strong factor. It helps absorb antioxidants much deeper in our body.
  • They enjoy longevity. They have night long parties where people from age groups of 14 to 100 years participate. They dance together, laugh together. Community is vital for a joyous longevity.

Nicoya, Costa Rica, USA

  • Wake up very early and keep working until night.
  • Do whatever you like doing.
  • All household chores be manually done.
  • Prioritize special moments for family and friends over work.
  • Black beans + squash + corns provide all 9 amino acids for protein in our body without any element of cholesterol or saturated fats.

Summary

These blue zones are slowly disappearing as processed food reaches every nook and corner of the world. Still, regular social interactions with strangers are better predictors of longevity than exercise or food.
