This is the first Dream On story we are publishing in our blog. This is a story about the brave Kim Phúc who took the war setbacks as her stepping stone to change the world around her. But for the setbacks, we would never have had the kind of organisation she runs today....Read on...
On June 8th 1972, South Vietnamese planes dropped a napalm bomb on Trang Bang, forcing Kim Phúc, other civilians and soldiers to flee the Caodai Temple and run for their lives along the dirt road. Two of her cousins and two other villagers were killed.
Kim Phúc tore off her burning clothes as she ran but still suffered incredibly bad burns, the scars of which she still has today. In the picture below, she is screaming, “too hot, too hot" as she runs.
Kim Phúc was the young child who became known as the 'Girl in the Picture' after photographer Nick Ut took a photo of her running naked away from a dropped napalm bomb in Vietnam.
Nick Ut took the injured children to hospital, where the doctors believed Kim Phúc would not survive. After 17 surgical procedures, she made it home alive.
When one is faced with such life threatening situations, how does one get back the self confidence? Kim Phúc had all the reasons / excuses to lead a normal life, but then, it is these setbacks that can push us to Dream On. As the book Dream On shows you, these setbacks are god sent to push us to think different and move towards the purpose of our life.
Kim suffered many years of painful burn therapy, but she always longed to reach out and help other children who were victimized by war. As she recovered, Kim Phúc decided that she wanted to become a doctor to help other people, and studied medicine at university. But then she was taken away from her studies to be used as a propaganda symbol by the Vietnamese government.
Another setback? No, it was another opportunity, another nudge from God for her, to think a little different and chase her mission of life. She eventually made her way to Cuba, where she continued studying and met her future husband Bui Huy Toan.
And when one is on its mission, HE will also make sure that things fall in place. Today, she is a Canadian citizen, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and spends her time campaigning to provide medical and psychological assistance to child victims of war.
She runs a foundation to help the victims of war. You can visit here for more details related to this foundation:
Her incredible strength and spirit are evident when she speaks about forgiveness and helping children. The Kim Foundation International may have been inspired by her pain, but its focus is on world peace and healing.
Her story is an incredible tale of overcoming extreme adversity in order to provide hope for others. She is an inspiration to us all. She is a live example of Dream On, of overcoming setbacks and understanding that these setbacks are only a little nudge from HIM for us to Dream On.
Without all the setbacks that she had to face, we would never had any organisation like Kim Foundation. This was a direction God wanted her to take, and she listened to her calling, understood these little nudges and dreamt on.
