There was a beautiful little bird who used to fly proudly across the boundless beautiful blue sky. The wonder stuck gazers on the planet earth used to appreciate the beauty of this creature and its flamboyant rainbow colored feathers. Everyone was awed by its flight and array of colors it used to display while flying, till one day, a rich man decided to "possess" the bird for her little daughter....read on...
When the little girl first saw the bird, she decided then and there that this bird is going to be hers. She demanded the same from her rich father. She wanted that beauty from nature so that she can watch her closely and have a happier life everyday watching the magnificence of its colors.
Her father soon obliged her. They caught hold of this rare species and brought it in a cage as a birthday gift for her daughter. Daughter was super excited, and she knew that a look at the bird every morning would start her day on a super positive note, and that her life would be much better off from now on. And she was dead right for the first few weeks.
As is with the law of nature, things started to change soon. The bird, which was meant to zoom in free air, was unable to express its feelings in the constraints of a rather beautiful cage. Its array of colors was still intact but definitely lost some of the gloss and vibrancy. The bird itself became dull, and started to age sooner than it normally would have. With losing sheen, the bird was able to attract less of the girl's time and attention. Soon, the girl got busy with "other important" stuff in life.
After another month or so, came a time when the girl did not have any time for the bird except for cleaning the cage weekly and feeding food and water every day. The girl which "possessed" the beautiful bird, soon realized that the bird was no more giving the same feeling of excitement and happiness as she thought it would. She told the same to her father.
Father came and explained her the fundamental principle of life. He said:
Isn't this a familiar situation with so many things in our lives? The relationships that we tend to "possess" start to diminish with time. It could be the relationship with our spouse, parents, kids or even our pets. We tend to lose interest as time passes off. Just compare the excitement you had at the beginning of any of these relationships and the state of relationship that you have today. You will realize the tapering in the quality of relationship that may have happened over time.
What is the best way to live life and cherish these relationships then? The only way is "not to possess" anyone. Although you may be in a relationship, you must let others live their own lives, and love them for the way they are, and accept them the way HE created them. Nurture and cherish their natural self without putting your own cage of do's and don'ts and inhibiting their natural being.
Let them live !! Love them and be loved without getting possessed or possessing anyone. This is the true form of love - the way it was designed to be.
The girl understood and let the bird fly back to where it was supposed to. The earth gazers could again visualize the beauty of the bird. The girl kept a great relationship with the bird as she watched the bird everyday in the sky, soaring new heights, displaying vibrant colors - for the bird was no more "possessed", rather just loved by her.
